Why are roman catholics always described as 'devout'? And why is all criticism of their faith 'bigotry'?

Can they not accept any intellectual questioning of practices such as lighting candles, indulgences, genuflection, holy water, purgatory, let alone the m (wafer worship), the papacy, Mary worship etc. all of which are superstitious and unscriptural.
