Help... Why does he do this?

By the way he responds to you when you are near it seems obvious... He misses you. I'm sure once you move closer together this will eliminate those sad feelings. (also most guys have a hard time putting their feelings into words, they're not as talkative as women). -he treats you really good and by all the hugs and kisses u get, sounds like you've got a keeper. :)
