What happens if you can't afford to pay a criminal lawyer?

Kind of a unique situation; my fiance was wrongfully accused of aulting his ex/business partner, ad because of which was forced out of his own business, which has made it veeeerry difficult on us financially. Right now he's dealing with the criminal end of things. Well, a friend of his family (we'll use the name Jim) had payed for his bail bond. He was also good friends with one of the best lawyers in the state, and Jim said not to worry about a thing, and that he would take care of it. Well, long story short, Jim backed out on his word, and my fiance is now stuck with the bill, which neither of us can afford, nor do we have anyone who is able to front us the money. The lawyer has already represented him at a preliminary hearing, and is now pestering us for the money, and even advised Jim to revoke his bail bond. We are basically scrounging up as much as we can to afford a new bail bond, but we still have a pissed off lawyer who we can't afford. We've tried numerous times to talk to Jim, but as of right now he's not an option. Any advice?
